History
The Program on the Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change was launched at the 10th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that was held in early December of 2004 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The meeting was initiated by the Pennsylvania Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Policy and the Rock Ethics Institute at Penn State University in cooperation with the IUCN Environmental Law Commission-Ethics Working Group, the Center for Applied Ethics at Cardiff University, the Centre for Global Ethics at Birmingham University, the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research, the Oxford University Climate Change Group, and EcoEquity.
The major outcome of this meeting was the Buenos Aires Declaration on the Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change.
As more fully set out in the declaration, the participants agreed that ethical inquiry into the ethical dimensions is an urgent concern for a number of reasons and that climate change raises several specific ethical issues.
