We are in the midst of a proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with many and, at times, astonishing commercial and civil/ public applications. These flight vehicles pose many exciting technical challenges with often clear societal benefits, for example support of dis- aster-relief efforts and environmental monitoring. The development and use of UAVs also have some serious ethical implications. An abuse will certainly lead to reactionary restrictions that will stifle the advancement of UAVs despite their clear economical and societal advantages. In this talk I will highlight technical and ethical challenges that I believe need to be addressed in order to ensure the continued success of UAVs in the future.
Dr. Götz Bramesfeld is currently an Assistant Professor in Aerospace Engineering at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. His research interests are applied aerodynamics and ethical issues related to small and micro aerial vehicles. Current research projects include the design and optimization of small multirotor and fixed-wing UAVs. Before joining Ryerson in 2013, Dr. Bramesfeld was an Assistant Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. He has a PhD and a MS in aerospace engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. Past work experience includes the de- sign and analysis of fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
