Visiting Speaker 2007

Charles W. Mills

Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of Illinois at Chicago

Charles Mills works in the general area of oppositional political theory, and is the author of numerous articles as well as three books: The Racial Contract(1997), Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race(1998), and From Class to Race: Essays in White Marxism and Black Radicalism (2003). A joint book with Carole Pateman, Contract and Domination, is scheduled to appear from Polity Press in 2007, and he is currently trying to finish off a collection of his Caribbean essays, Radical Theory, Caribbean Reality: Race, Class, and Social Domination, which will be published by the University of the West Indies Press.

The Racial Contract and Beyond

In this lecture, MIlls will talk about his motivation in writing The Racial Contract, as a challenge to the conceptual frameworks of mainstream white political philosophy. He will also discuss the reception of the book in the ten years since its 1997 publication, and his forthcoming joint work with Carole Pateman that attempts to bring gender into the picture.
