Penn State Rock Ethics Institute Faculty Fellow Gary John Adler, Jr., assistant professor of sociology, co-authored an article about the analysis of participants in short-term mission based relationships and how they manage inequality while pursuing an ideal of partnership across distance.

In "The Gift Economy of Direct Transnational Civic Action: How Reciprocity and Inequality Are Managed in Religious 'Partnerships',"  Gary John Adler, Jr., assistant professor of sociology, and Stephen Offutt, associate professor of development studies at Asbury Theological Seminary, explain their research to increase knowledge of short-term mission travel, to show how gift exchange structures can facilitate transnational religious partnerships, and to suggest ways to use gift exchange theory to understand transnational civic action.
