Rock affiliate faculty member to serve as a visiting scholar for NEH Summer Institute
Sarah Clark Miller, associate professor of philosophy and women's, gender, and sexuality studies, and Rock affiliate faculty member, will serve as a visiting scholar for “Diverse Philosophical Approaches to Sexual Violence,” a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute to be held at Elon University June 18-30, 2017.
Ann J. Cahill will direct the institute, which will address key questions focusing on the meanings of sexual violence, the nature of the harms it imposes, the difference between sexual violence and other sexual acts, and individual and collective responsibilities to respond to sexual violence. The institute will include themes such as embodiment and vulnerability; consent and its limits; the role of the state; power, inequality, and justice; and globalism, localism, and difference.
“Informed by a wide spectrum of philosophical approaches, this institute aims not only to prompt deep, wide, and meaningful discourse in the moment, but to build the knowledge base and analytical approaches of the future.”1
The application deadline for this summer institute is March 1, 2017.
