Workshop: Race in Africa
Contact: Carolyn Umbricht, ccu1@psu.edu,
The Rock Ethics Institute plans a workshop on the topic of race in Africa on November 8, 2014, and will host the renowned scholar Achille Mbembe as the keynote speaker for the meeting. The workshop will draw from recent work by members of the Global Approaches to Intersectionality project on race, ethnicity, nationalism and non-racialism in Rwanda, South Africa and the United States, and the 2014 iteration of the Johannesburg Workshop in Theory and Criticism, which is directed by Professor Mbembe. We invite faculty, graduate students and members of the broader community with an interest in questions of race to join us for the workshop on November 8th and Professor Mbembe’s keynote lecture on November 7th.
Speakers: Dr. Achille Mbembe, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand; Dr. Gabeba Baderoon, Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies and African Studies, The Pennsylvania State University; Axelle Karera, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Philosophy, The Pennsylvania State University
