Values are an essential component of research and practice in science and engineering.  This initiative aims to provide training and research support in coupled ethical-epistemic analysis.  This unique method adds an important dimension to scientific integrity often missing in more traditional research integrity approaches.  Training in coupled ethical-epistemic analysis provides engineers and scientists with the knowledge and skills needed to appreciate the role of ethical and epistemic values in their work in order to be able to analyze their impact and assess whether the best values are used in the most responsible ways.  Our work is also designed to provide tools and resources for ethically informed decision support science and engineering.

An important component of science and engineering research and practice is the desire to “get it right.”  A central focus of science and engineering education is thus the knowledge and skills scientists and engineers need to ensure that their work meets the highest standards of empirical and theoretical adequacy. But responsible science and engineering research and practice must also strive to “get it right” in the sense of understanding what knowledge and techniques are the most epistemically and ethically salient to the issues being addressed.  Ethics education and research support that includes coupled ethical-epistemic analysis provides a foundation for responsible decision support by encouraging  the development of the knowledge and technologies required to satisfy the best interests of the broader community and the environment.
