  1. Ph.D. Sociology, State University of New York at Albany, 1999

Before coming to Penn State, I worked at Policy Research Associates, Inc. As a member of the Department of Sociology and Criminology, I teach courses in the sociology of deviance. My principal research interests involve understanding the relationships among crime/deviance, morality, self-regulation, and social context. I am also interested in understanding what leads people to judge negatively the behaviors, beliefs, physical characteristics, or feelings or others. I have authored 50 or so articles and I’ve been fortunate to win awards for both my research and teaching. At the moment, I am working on papers examining the relationship between college students’ moral values and their willingness to engage in deviant acts, as well as their endorsement of punitive criminal justice policies and practices.
