Sherwin Early Career Professorships
Sherwin Early Career Professorships are given to promising faculty in the College of the Liberal Arts at the beginning of their careers and include support for the faculty member's research and teaching program. The professorship is a gift of Douglas and Joyce Sherwin.
Doug Sherwin, born in 1915, was a 1940 Penn State chemical engineering graduate and a varsity baseball player. Because his father lost all his money during the depression, Doug worked his way through Penn State at the Corner Room and a fraternity. During World War II and the Berlin Airlift, he worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. government on loan from ConocoPhillips. Doug met and married his wife, Joyce, during this time. Later, he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford. He returned to ConocoPhillips until his retirement in 1983.
An article on ethics that Doug Sherwin published in the Harvard Business Review in 1983 is available here.
